My story
In April 2011 I intend to row 6000KM across the Indian Ocean from Western Australia to the island of Mauritius situated just off the east coast of Africa. In doing so, I will become the First Irish Person to row across the Indian Ocean. Only four people in the world have ever rowed the Indian Ocean solo.I will be spending up to 110 days ALONE at sea. Using nothing more than my arms and legs to cover the gruelling distance of 6000 kilometres, this will be an incomparable mental and psychical challenge.I will be facing 50 foot swells, hurricane force winds, Salt Sores, and an unrelenting Sun!Less people have rowed an ocean than have climbed Everest or been into Space. Out of the 174 completed rows across any ocean, only 4 people have rowed across the Indian Ocean. That makes more people to have walked on the moon then have rowed the Indian Ocean! The majority of the time I will be rowing naked. This is a proven method by previous ocean rowers and proves to be much more comfortableThroughout my epic journey across the Ocean visitors to my website will be able to follow my progress using satellite technology. I will also be uploading daily video updates. In addition to this I will be Tweeting and blogging regularly, allowing my supporters to interact with me throughout the trip.In the course of achieving my ambition I am trying to raise as much money as possible for Keep A child Alive. Keep a Child Alive is dedicated to providing life-saving anti-retroviral treatment, care and support services to children and families whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India by directly engaging the global public in the fight against AIDS.The plight of AIDS orphans in India is one of immeasurable complexities that destines children to die with the virus left unchecked and untreated. The debilitating stigma that surrounds HIV in India renders children orphaned by AIDS to be forcefully driven from their villages and left to fend for themselves. Located three hours outside of Hyderabad, the Chandrakal Orphanage has become home to nearly 60 HIV positive children who come from the most harrowing of circumstances from being deserted on trains and quarantined in village huts, to fleeing antagonistic villages to survive. Keep a Child Alive has made it possible for these children to live in peace at the newly constructed orphanage, where they eat well-balanced meals, go to school for the first time and experience the once seeming impossibility of a normal life. Keep a Child Alive most recently purchased two 32-seat buses for the orphanage to ease the long, hard journey to Hyderabad every month where the children receive their life-saving ARV treatment. The government’s pediatric AIDS specialist has selected the Chandrakal Orphanage as their main site to refer children in need, and upholds their holistic model of care as a model for anyone caring for children with HIV in India. So please give whatever you can to this great cause. Your small donation can change a life.
