Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Anyone who knows me is aware that I like to run ........ a long way .......a very long way.  I have completed many marathons and ultramarathons because I love running.

I'll be honest, I never usually raise money when I do a run as I have difficulty in asking people to sponsor me for doing something that I love doing.  I suppose it's a bit like normal people asking their mates to sponsor them to pop down the pub to watch footy for the afternoon.

However, this time it's different.  Because this time I've taken on a challenge that, even by my slightly unhinged standards, is a bit of a beast.  I'm attempting to run 184 miles (www.t184.co.uk).  As if this isn't a big enough challenge, I'll be doing it unsupported.  That means I'll be carrying everything with me and won't be able to accept so much as a Jelly Baby from generous spectators.  The only thing supporters can provide is a cheery wave and one of those "Well done you're looking great!" lies that spur us runners on.

There'll be 7 checkpoints and 27 standpipes where water will be available but every single calorie will need to be squeezed into my backpack, along with clothes, sleeping equipment (that hopefully won't be used) and medical kit (that also, hopefully won't be used).

I figured that if I was going to run this monster I may need some extra encouragement and raising money for the amazing Manx Cancer Help charity seems like the best way.  When the going gets tough in the race (normally at about 40 miles.........just the 144 to go!) I can reflect on the people who have sponsored me and use their generosity to spur me on.  I will also be aware of the fact that no matter how hard it is, the discomfort that I'll be suffering won't come anywhere near that experienced by cancer sufferers every day.  Manx Cancer Help provide incredible support for both cancer sufferers and family members, making the unbearable more bearable.

I've chosen to put my body through the ringer.  Cancer sufferers don't get a choice, it just happens to them.  Please give us a few quid.  Your money will make a real difference to people's lives.  Thank you.
