Well it's that time of year again - Yep it's TOUGH GUY 2008, some of you know we completed the challenge last year for Shine, but this time there's 12 of us, somehow we managed to recruit 4 more..... The training is almost over - we've been up and down the South Downs each weekend, crawled through as many ditches and streams as we could find and swam through a few local swimming pools (outside of course) and soon we'll be off to sunny Wolverhampton - Sunday 27th January; the sun will be shining, the thought of any snow long gone and this time we've been assured that the lake heaters have been switch on and the batteries fully charged for the electric shocks..... Tough Guy 2008 is a rather extreme experience, competitors from all over the globe travel to compete in what can only be described as "It seemed a good idea at the time" - the course comprises of "The Country Miles" and "The Killing Fields ". The country miles is basically a warm up of about 6-7 miles with a few twists around a farm incorporating several ditches, forests, hills and did I mention the odd surprise thrown in - all just to get us ready for the killing fields (obstacle course). The obstacles are not for the faint hearted either, they start with two massive "A" frames to clamber over and whilst in-between them you have to jump through 3 electric curtains - honestly that's just what you need when your cold, wet and wondering why on earth you are doing it again. Most of the obstacles contain water, mud, ropes, more water, bucket loads of mud, climbing, under water tunnels, fiery holes, tyres and barbed wire and I don't think I've ever seen so much mud - they must import it..... Some might say - "why do we pay to do something like that" - well there is a method to our madness, firstly we all like mud and secondly there's SHINE THEATRE TRUST - who are a wonderful organisation that give all children, no matter what their abilities are, the opportunity to perform on stage and having experienced several of their productions - it's just amazing!!!!! If you not keen on donating "online", just pop a cheque in the post made payable to "Shine Theatre Trust" and send it to - Tim Claringbull, 22 South Street, Ditchling. BN6 8UQ.
