My story

TOGS is managed by the Thika Diocese of the Anglican Church of Kenya to support poor grandparents who now care for their orphaned grandchildren. Hand in Hand has supported this scheme since the beginning of 2007.

Through social worker attached to the Anglican Church of Kenya, parishes within the Thika diocese identify grandparents who need support to care for their orphaned grandchildren. For each grandparent supported the TOGS fund Provides 75% of the aid and the parish supplies 25% and is given the responsibility of continuing their care beyond this one off gift.

The intention is to help grandparents become self sufficient, enabling them to provide for their orphaned grandchildren's education and welfare needs. After spending what little money they have on medicines for their children, these grandparents are left with no means to support their orphaned grandchildren, at a time in their lives when they are in need of support themselves. Support takes the form of the donation of a milking cow, stocks to refurbish a village shop or the provision of clay and charcoal for sale locally. This gives the grandparents the opportunity to use their skills and past experience to provide their own income.
