My story

Thank you for visiting Toki's fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor Toki online.

Toki the cheetah, together with his brother Sambu, were orphaned when they were less than a month old in Kenya’s northern rangelands.  Their mother was killed by a lion and without human help they would die. The brothers were brought back from the brink by the Craig family in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and soon became fit enough to venture beyond the Craig’s house in the middle of the reserve.  That’s when I first met them.  They were just 12 weeks old, and still entirely dependant on human beings for food and protection.  I hoped that my experiences watching wild cheetahs in Kenya would help with their upbringing, and ultimately their release back into the wild.
Toge

By the time Toki and Sambu were 18 months old, they were living wild and free on the reserve, hunting for themselves and supporting each other as a young but powerful coalition.  Their future looked very bright.  Then tragedy struck.  In the  May of 2004 Sambu was killed in the night by a lion.  Both brothers had a lot of experience with other predators and had, to date, dodged their attacks.  This time Sambu was unlucky.  The loss effected us all deeply, especially Toki.  He was now alone and as a consequence very vulnerable.  He became sullen and quiet and though he was an experienced hunter, it had always been with his brother as an ally.  Following the months after Sambu’s death, we kept a very close eye on Toki, and gradually he found his feet as a single male cheetah.  Then came another blow; Toki was attacked by 3 territorial adult male cheetahs on Lewa and almost killed.  His convalescence was slow and his rehabilitation to life in the wild gradual, and it was at this time we decided that Toki should be moved to new pastures.  Fortunately, Ol Pejeta Conservancy stepped up to offer Toki safe haven and he is there to this day.  He has had some scrapes and near misses, but he continues to live as a wild cheetah in a huge, but securely fenced area.  Our aim is to offer Toki the opportunity to sire cubs of his own and that he might be something of an ambassador for cheetah conservation in Kenya.

There are probably far fewer than 13000 cheetah left in the wild.  Every one counts.  They continue to suffer persecution because of conflict with livestock, and as land is developed cheetahs are squeezed out of a home.  Toki has been, and continues to be, an inspiration and a joy to have followed.  He is very close to my heart.  I sincerely hope that his future will be bright and that he may help to increase awareness of the plight of large predators in East Africa.
