As some of you may know, Simone went to Cambodia last year and volunteered as an English teacher with Globalteer and the Sangkheum Centre for Children.
Globalteer is a UK based NGO and its objectives are to support local communities, raise awareness about the plight faced by poverty stricken countries and educate local communities about environmental degradation and preservation of wildlife. They have ongoing projects in Cambodia, Thailand, Columbia, Peru and Indonesia.
Simone's Story
During my time with Globalteer, I taught English to orphans of all ages at the Sangkheum Centre for Children. Due to the extent of poverty in Cambodia, many kids often become child slaves or taken as child prostitutes and it doesn’t help that overseas tourists often create a market for this kind of behaviour. As well, many kids lost their parents through HIV/AIDs, which is highly prevalent in Cambodia.
Hence, by teaching kids English and other skills such as sewing, tapestry and driving, they are able to become tour guides, tuk tuk drivers or go into the textiles industry to earn a living for themselves. My experience in Globalteer was invaluable and knowing that you can make a difference directly to the world, even just a small one, is worth anything in the world.
Your donation
With first hand experience in Cambodia working with Globalteer, Simone can tell you exactly what your money will go towards and how it will be spent. Globalteer relies entirely on volunteers, from management to the volunteers who go out to all the projects each day. They also rely on donations and sponsors.
Globalteer has projects in education, environmental and wildlife preservation as well as projects customised to local needs (such as a water filter project to improve access to clean water in rural areas). A lot of the times, the infrastructure is not good enough and projects often lack resources. At the various schools Simone went to in Siem Reap, there was overcrowding leading to spread of illnesses and the kids had limited access to books and basic amenities such as clean toilets and food.
This is where your donation comes in. Your donation will help purchase resources such as pens, pencils and textbooks. It will help build clean toilets and classrooms. It will improve access to clean water and other necessities. Most importantly, it will directly help those who need it most.
