TURNING THE DESERT GREEN
There is a saying that if you give a man a fish you feed him for one day; but, if you teach him how to fish – he feeds himself for a lifetime. This concept is at the heart of ‘empowerment’: passing on knowledge and skills as opposed to just handing out short-term help.
Mali is a country in West Africa. It is a very poor desert region that always has food shortages and low rainfall. 85% of the local population is illiterate and fewer than half the children go to school. There is very little clean drinking water and poor health clinics.
We, Fatimah Anwar and Shuhena Bhanu have crazily pledged to raise £10,000 to help the people of Mali!! We plan to do this through a series of extreme challenges from being silent for a day to parachuting. If this isn't enough to get you donating, we hope to organise local events, sponsored walks and football & mooting tournaments. If you want to join our 2 woman team, feel free to do so by donating money, taking part in a challenge or raising money yourselves!
The money you donate will assist Islamic Relief (an impartial non-governmental organisation free from religious and political affiliation) in helping local people to develop 200 acres of farmland for poor local people to grow rice and crops. The local people will also receive training on better farming techniques and how to market their crops.
As a result, the whole community becomes ‘empowered’ and are able to lead better and more dignified lives.
So come on, dig deep into your pockets or give up some of your time, and together, "We can Turn the Desert Green!"
