We take humanitarian aid to those in need to improve lives and help the vulnerable

Story

We are an ordinary British couple who flew in late November from the UK to the Haiyan / Yolanda Typhoon disaster zone in the Philippines. We returned there to our base in Palo, Leyte in late January to facilitate the rebuilding of fifty homes destroyed in the typhoon at an average cost of £150 per home. We also helped coordinate the delivery of 25 tonnes of relief aid raised in the UK by Hope and Aid Direct, our UK supporting charity, directly to those families who were identified as being in a desperate situation.

We have supplied two large chainsaws, and salaried chainsaw operators, to convert fallen coconut trees into planks and beams. Our direct purchases of chainsaws, petrol generators, water purification kits, solar panels, tarpaulins, power tools, and building materials were funded by private donations and also with the help of Lighthouse International Church in Southampton, Soul Survivor Church in Watford and Light and Life Ministries in Swindon. We are very grateful for all donations however large or small.

We aim to return to the Philippines in May 2014. We will use future monies raised to purchase further roofing materials as well as to salary the chainsaw operators, so that the local churches can help families in need irrespective of any beliefs the recipients may hold. We will also be helping and encouraging schools and leading seminars in churches.

Our target is to raise sufficient funds for a further 50 homes in the next eight weeks which is an additional £7,500.

Our base is Palo Christian Church, 10 miles south of the city of Tacloban on Leyte Island, 'ground zero' for the typhoon. We will purchase materials out there ourselves and oversee the delivery of the materials to the local senior pastor, who via his network of pastors will oversee its distribution and the production of the timber so as to directly benefit the most needy families in the area. He also is helping his contacts across Leyte and the whole of Southern and Eastern Samar, and his network covers a large proportion of the most badly damaged areas in the Philippines.

We are accountable to the largest Assemblies of God church in the Philippines (Pastor Nonoy, Word of Hope, Quezon City, Manila) who has approved of this project.

We are a low overhead organisation; when we are out there we sleep in very basic accommodation in the church and live off the same simple rice-based diet as do the others who make the church their home.
