Accenture Kilimanjaro Trek 1 · 27 August 2009 ·

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Story

Vasin’s Trek up Kilimanjaro (27 August - 5 September 2009)

Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and it is the highest free standing mountain in the world at 5,985m. For me it has been a life long dream to reach the Roof of Africa, but the cherry on the “top“ (excuse the pun!) is knowing that my dream will be aiding VSO to change the lives of HIV patients, specifically women & children, in Southern Africa.

The Cause

At an estimated 5 million, South Africa has one of the highest rates of people living with HIV and AIDS in the world amounting to half of all HIV-positive people in 9 Southern African countries. The inequality of women is a major contributor. Violence against women is endemic. Through various initiatives such as the placement of volunteers, training workshops and small grants, VSO is addressing the needs of women and orphans and vulnerable children as well as developing opportunities for local people to become involved in volunteering in their own communities

The Trek!

The Rongai route, a less trekked route, is said to be probably the most beautiful route with stunning views, all along the route, over the Kenyan plains and Kibo crater. It begins in farmland passing through a local village and a beautiful forest, then on through a variety of climate zones.

Did I get to the Top?

On the 3rd September 2009, I successfully reached the peak of Mt Kilimanjaro together with 19 other colleagues from around the globe. It was a truly life altering experience, the beauty of this majestic mountain of Africa is truly beyond words. It was also the most physically demanding thing that I have ever done in my life….and something that I am unlikely to repeat in the near future.

Making a Difference

Thank you to all who have contributed to my campaign. Yes, I was successful in reaching my fund raising goal of £10,000, however, it does not end here. The challenges with regard to AIDS in Southern Africa is huge, so please feel free to continue with your donations – any amount will be appreciated, no matter how small
