St John Ambulance has a programme of Open Gardens to raise money but  this year due to the COVID-19 some of our events are going live. Here is a selection of lovely gardens to look at in Norfolk with more to follow over the next few weeks.

Thorpland Garden is a beautiful and mature quintessential English garden is in a superb setting surrounding a fine Tudor house with the ruins of an old chapel in the grounds which amount to about 6 acres.  There has been some recent replanting and the garden includes paeony beds, heraceous borders, lawns, a rose garden and a walled kitchen garden in full working order kept to a very high standard.  There is a walk to the small lake and nearby restored shepherd's hut where you will see the many interesting trees and shrubs. Hoe Hall is a Georgian house built on the site of an earlier dwelling but the garden was not developed until Victorian times when it was typical for the period with exotic plants, flower filled window boxes and tidy small beds in front of the house. It is situated next to the Church and has extensive views over the parkland with the site of a deserted medieval village and open countryside.

There have been many changes over the years where the barn and outbuildings were built and the walled garden was used for growing vegetables ; now it is a main feature with many climbers ,shrubs, flowers and a swimming pool. The fruit trees remain but the old style flower beds have been replaced with a wonderful collection of old and new roses. The owner was inspired by a visit to Sissinghurst and has created a white wisteria walk along two sides of the wall with a mixed herbaceous and shrub border on the other. It is a fantastic sight in late Spring with a scent to match and you have a chance to see it on this video.

Tylers Barn garden in Norfolk has been created over several years by Raymond O’Shea and Annie Tempest the well known artist, sculptor and cartoonist whose characters have been enchanting readers of Country Life since 1994.  tottering.com is where you will find all the information including details of the beautiful rose created by David Austin to celebrate 25 years of Daffy and Dicky.

The garden is an oasis of beauty on the edge of a small village in Norfolk and is packed with gorgeous flowers, a sunken walled garden, Siberian birches and a vegetable garden all of  which you will see on this video .

Silverstone Farm is the creation of George Carter, the well known garden designer and author, and has featured in magazines and on television. The garden is based on Dutch and English 17th century prototypes using plant material of the time with the addition of fountains, lawns, a pool and wonderful hedges giving a theatrical feel. There are many quirky features to be spotted and the old farm buildings have also been incorporated into the garden.
