My story

In July 2009, a group of 22 Explorer Scouts and 6 Leaders will be visiting Poland for a 10 day expedition. Amongst other activities we will be experiencing Polish culture and traditions, as well as visiting the former Auschwitz-Birkenau Extermination Camp and learning about the atrocities that happened there less than 70 years ago.

To raise money for both this expedition and the Holocaust Educational Trust, we will be taking part in a sponsored 'Virtual Vistula Triathlon Relay'.  The Vistula is the longest river in Poland at 651 miles (1047 km) in length – that is nearly 3 times the length of Britain’s longest river, the River Severn. The Vistula passes through both Oświęcim (where Auschwitz is located) and Krakow (where we will be staying for part of our expedition) and then carries on up, through Warsaw, and then empties into the Baltic Sea at Gdańsk.

Our plan is to run, cycle and row the 651 mile distance of the Vistula – but: here at home; in a Scout Hut; on machines and in just 24 hours! At all times there will be an Explorer Scout, Leader or supporter on a treadmill, exercise bike or rowing machine, and each of us will have to complete approximately 1 mile per hour over the 24 hour period.

The Holocaust Educational Trust was established in 1988 with an aim to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and the important lessons to be learned for today. You can learn more about the Holocaust Educational Trust at www.het.org.uk

Bebington District Explorer Scouts offers challenges and adventure to young people aged 14-18, from Bebington, and surrounding areas on the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside. You can find out more about us at our website: www.bebingtonexplorers.org.uk

Please sponsor us today, and if you are a UK taxpayer, please let us know, as 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. If you are sponsoring a particular Explorer Scout or Leader, please include their full name in the comments section.

Thank you!

The money raised by the Virtual Vistula Triathlon Relay will be split 50/50 between Bebington District Explorer Scouts and the Holocaust Educational Trust.
