Update: 31 May 2011 Over the past few months, there has been numerous fundraising events held by individuals throughout the company. Ben and Mick organised a 10 mile sponsored walk, which Ben’s son Owen also joined in and managed to muster up some sponsorship for our cause. The sponsored walk was held on a very warm Sunday the 10 April. Four Vulcan employees, Brian, Charlotte, Mick and Ben, plus Ben’s 8 year old son Owen took part. The route of the walk took in the last 10 miles of the Sheffield Round walk, with us starting at Endcliffe Park in Hunters Bar, then walking up through the Limb Valley up to the Norfolk Arms at Ringinglow, where we stopped off for a well deserved and refreshing drink. We then carried on walking down the Porter Valley back to Endcliffe Park. The walk raised £460.0 pounds, so we would like to thank all family and friends who sponsored us. Brian had another curry night, which if the last one was anything to go by, would have been absolutely brilliant. Raising £200. Steve has rustled up further money from his family and friends at his sons christening, a very ingenious idea! And managed to raise over £350 with more still to come. Amy and Chris’s mum Gillian has so far managed to raise over £350, with the help of her patrons and friends at the Admiral Benbow in Chapel St Leonards, a great big thank you goes out to you at the Admiral Benbow for all your help and support. And obviously, a big thank you goes out to everyone else who has raised money for our cause. Well, the time is nearly upon us. Amy, Brian, Chris, Claire, Louise, Mick, Roger and Steve will be there this time next week working on the sand dam that they have all worked hard to raise the funds for. With the finer points such as injections, sleeping bags, mosquito nets, other medicines, clothes, etc all now finalised. The team are ready and raring to go. The tension and excitement coming from the team is something that all at Vulcan are sharing and we are all really proud of our colleagues taking up this charitable cause to help raise the funds and actually go out and help build the dam. We have even received a welcoming dvd from the community that we are going out to help in Mtito Andei via Excellent Development, showing their appreciation and anticipation for us to go out and help them. We head out on Monday 6 June and will be spending 8 days (10 including the travelling) helping build the sand dam and visiting the local community and other dam sites. There will be a further update from us once we come back from our excursion, hopefully with photos and possibly a video. Good luck to all our colleagues going out there next week, and hope that you have a safe journey. Vulcan Engineering Limited
Update: 25th January 2011
Good day to you all! So far, we've raised £533.50, this has been a contribution of the generosity of those people below, and also the few fundraising events we have done over the past couple of months.
In December, we had a Christmas Raffle, Fancy Dress Competition and a donation instead of sending each other Christmas Cards, including those below that donated, we managed to raise a total of £188.50.
Our CEO also hosted a Curry Night at £10 a head where he cooked, and I do have to say, the most delicious of curries I have had in many a year, and thanks to this inspirational event, he managed to raise £160.
Thank you to all those that participated in the above events!
Upcoming Events:
We will be setting up an exercise bike in the office, where over a period of 5 working days (8 hours) we will be cycling from Lands End to John O' Groats. This will be done on the following days:
9th and 23rd February, 9th and 23rd March, 6th and 13th April.
Each person involved will take a 30 minute stint on the bike, with an aim to cover over 100miles per day, this is going to be a very tiring task, however we are all raring to go.
Again thank you for your donations in advance, and I'll keep you posted upon the events in the coming months.
Claire Louise

“…Excellent Development is a UK charity passionate about sand dams. Sand dams are the lowest cost form of rainwater harvesting and are an ecological miracle. These small-scale dams built in seasonal river channels vastly transform dry environments into places where animals, plants and people can thrive by keeping water where communities need it long after the seasonal rains have gone! Each sand dam can provide clean water for up to 1,200 people, with minimal maintenance will last for at least 50 years. The equivalent of just £10 can therefore provide clean water for 1 person for life.
Excellent’s vision is to ensure that by 2020, 3 million more people per year living in drylands worldwide can gain access to clean water through the building of 2,500 sand dams every year. Following the proven success of their approach in Kenya, Excellent has already developed pilot projects in Sudan and Mozambique to ensure people living in dryland regions of other African countries can also experience the benefits of sand dams.
Vulcan Engineering is really pleased to have the opportunity to not only help a community in Kenya by funding one of these amazing structures but also to have the opportunity for a team of our people to help build it. We look forward to them coming back to tell us all about it…” by Alexander Oatham, Fundraising Development Manager, Excellent Development

We will be travelling to Nairobi on 6 June returning on 15 June, where we will be helping support a local village build a Sand Dam. Sand dams are shown to be the lowest cost form of rainwater harvesting, and during the intense rainy season, the dam fills up with rain water and sediment; the silt flows over the dam while the sand sinks.
After 1 to 4 rainy seasons, the riverbed upstream is filled up with sand: 25 to 40% of the volume of the sand held is actually water. Filtered by the sand, the water is clean and the dam refills naturally every rainy season. Thus giving the locals, clean healthy water, and also reducing the travel time to 30 – 60 minutes a day, instead of travelling up to 12 hours a day in drought periods. The sand dams themselves, cost around £10,000 to build, however, this provides water for life for up to 1,200 people living in the rural communities.
We at Vulcan Engineering are striving to be able to cover the cost of not just 1 dam, but 3 dams, over a three year period. And with your help, this is something that we can do.
Vulcan are covering the costs of the 10 peoples: travel, accommodation (within the local village), vaccinations, kit and time away from the business.
We have committed to Excellent Development to raise £10,000 minimum, to solely fund the sand dams – we need £10,000 per dam, we would love to build 3 dams in total, therefore, the more we raise the more dams can be built, providing life saving and a life long water source to villages who are routinely subjected to drought and famine.
Excellent Development work in partnership with the local communities to ensure the community is committed to the project. The community signs up to a co-operative whereby they commit to build the sand dam themselves, maintain and sign up to learn how to ‘cross crop’, change their land planes to a terraced surface, and become elevated in other disciplines – all to avoid famine and become self sufficient.
We will be doing lots of different fundraising events over the coming months, which of course, we will keep updated on here for you to see what fun and games we have all been upto.
Thanks
The Excellent Kenya Team
