Hi, Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. This page has been dedicated to Walter Firth who died peacefully at home on the 10th October 2007. Walter died the day before his 84th birthday. 18 months before, Walter had attended the hospital on numerous occasions regarding the weakness in his left hand. After consultations with various doctors the cause was inconclusive. He had a CT and a MRI scan and nothing untoward showed up. In September 2007 Walter, his wife Dorothy and his daughter Stacey visited some relations in the USA. Walter was looking forward to this trip as he hadn`t been to the USA before. He was amazed by the size of the country and he really enjoyed himself meeting up with the family. They made us very welcome and Walter took a couple of trips on their boats which he enjoyed. On our return we called off at Niagra Falls in Canada. Again he was amazed by the sight and told everyone on his return that they should visit because it was such a wonderful sight and experience. At the beginning of October Walter started to become weaker and weaker and was unable to use his hand. On the 10th October he got up as usual and had breakfast. He then remarked to Dorothy that he wasn`t feeling well. He sat in his chair and died peacefully with his wife next to him. On the 6th February an inquest was held at Rotherham Court into Walters death. The pathologist Dr Terry Marshall revealed that Walter had died from a rare kind of brain tumour. He said ," It was an extremely rare kind of low grade tumour that spreads widely through the brain so you can`t see that it is there". Dr Marshall went on to say ,"he had never encounted this type of brain tumour before and he had to consult other doctors and the internet to find out more". He liased with the doctors who had been treating Walter and they had had a look at the CT and MRI scans but nothing could be seen. More research is needed into this kind of tumour. It is very rare and is hard to detect. Many lives could be saved if they knew more. The type of tumour was a Oligodendroglioma. Walter is sadly missed by his family and friends and especially his grandson Michael who spent many hours discussing football. Walter had discussed with his wife that he didn`t want flowers at his funeral but he wanted any money to go to a worth while charity. I think the BTRC is an approiate charity.
