I am climbing Mount Everest Base Camp for the chairty Multiple Sclerosis Society as this condition has affected my immediate family (my father) and as such is close to my heart. MS struck my father in 1996 when he was 46 years of age and up until then he was a very fit and agile man partaking in lots of outdoor sports.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults. Around 100,000 people alone in the UK have MS. MS is the result of damage to myelin a protective sheath surrounding nervbe fibres of the central nervous system. When myelin is damaged this interferes with messages between the brain and other parts of the body. For some people MS is characterised by periods of relapse and remission while others it has a progressive pattern. For everyone it makes life unpredictable.
The MS Society fund scientific and applied research in order to make the maximum impact on MS and the quality of life of people affected by it. Therefore, I am hoping the money I raise will go towards this research.
