Our history

November 2004 saw the merger of  these well known and much respected charities which have  come together to form one organisation caring for patients with cancer and other progressive conditions.  Patients in north, south and west Dorset now have a seamless service of care whether they require support and advice in the comfort of their own homes, day care or in-patient care.
We also run social groups across the County which meet on a weekly basis offering friendship and support.

Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester was built thanks to the generosity of people and businesses throughout Dorset and beyond, following a public appeal.  It opened in January 1994 and with its eighteen beds, provides much needed in-patient hospice care for those with cancer, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other progressive conditions.  It also offers planned respite care.  Patients with difficult symptoms may be admitted for a short period so that these can be brought under control.  They may also come to the caring environment of the Hospice for the last days of their illness, should this be what they and their family wish.  It also offers day care.

The building was purpose built, has a homely and welcoming atmosphere and is set in lovely landscaped gardens.  There are four-bedded rooms, a family room, single bedrooms and a pleasant lounge and chapel.  There is also overnight accommodation for relatives.

Trimar Hospice was established in a fine Edwardian building at Greenhill in Weymouth in the early 1990s through similar generosity  by the local community and businesses.  Trimar Hospice provides day care for patients with cancer and also other incurable diseases offering patients nursing and medical support, companionship and the opportunity to enjoy new interests and social activities whilst giving their carers at home a break.

CancerCare Dorset was established in the early 1980s and was originally known as the West Dorset Macmillan Service.  Its fifteen specialist nurses have since that time visited patients in their own homes, the community hospitals and at Dorset County Hospital offering support and advice to those who have been diagnosed with cancer, motor neurone disease or other life threatening illnesses.  They work closely with district nurses, GPs and other health professionals bringing their specialist knowledge to ensure patients get the best care possible
