Thank you for visiting our fundraising page in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK and local Gambian charities.
THE CHALLENGE
The Challenge we are undertaking is a poor man's version of the Paris/Dakar Rally but with one or two 'minor' differences. The Challenge is to take a vehicle costing less than £100 from UK to Banjul in the Gambia over the Atlas Mountains and across the Sahara Desert where it will be auctioned and all proceeds donated to local Gambian charities. All other funds raised will go to the Make A Wish Foundation UK. The Challenge rules only allow vehicles costing LESS than £100 to participate; only £15 may be spent on improvements and all Teams must be self-sufficient - there is NO SUPPORT on route. The distance from York (our starting point) to Banjul (the finish line) is about 4000 miles and we shall attempt to create a record for the Longest Overland Pizza Delivery - as a rationalisation (excuse) for our madness.
THE TEAM
Ian Foxley and Tom Welch, from Whitwell are joined in this Challenge by "MyFanwy" , a Left Hand Drive 2CV Citroen Acadiane van, who gained her name because we found her languishing in a small village in North Wales. She is light enough to lift out of the sand dunes and mechanically simple enough for us to do running repairs if needed (at least that's the theory anyway). The final member of the Team is Captain Columbus Wishbone, the intrepid teddy bear mascot of Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, who has previously been up Everest, around the world three times including on the Silk Run, across Europe on a motor bike and taken part in the 24 hour Le Mans race. This adventure will form the Trans-Saharan episode within a series of books about Captain Columbus Wishbone and the Crew of the Good Ship "Guardian" which are currently under production with, hopefully, a television series to accompany them. This should produce a funding line for Make-A-Wish in the longer term.
SPONSORSHIP
IF YOU NEED AN INVOICE FOR YOUR COMPANY RECORDS PLEASE CONTACT US AT THE EMAIL OR TELEPHONE NUMBERS BELOW BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR DONATION ONLINE HERE.
Our aim is to secure at least £100 per mile through collective donation so: at 1 penny per mile the most you would be asked for (if we make it the whole way) would be £40. We intend that you will be able to check our progress daily on the Web at www.educatingdaddy.com/wheresdaddynow
Of course we would like you to sponsor us for multiple pence per mile... Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Make-A-Wish Foundation UK will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
AFTERMATH
Remember we will make nothing out of this...it all goes to local Gambian charities and the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK. With kind regards and many thanks for your support.
