About Whizz-Kidz

Whizz-Kidz has a very simple and tangible goal - to give disabled children and young people independent mobility.

Everybody values their independence and it is an essential part of growing up. By providing customised mobility equipment, such as powered wheelchairs and adapted tricycles, Whizz-Kidz gives disabled children and young people a chance to experience the independence that able-bodied people often take for granted.

This opens up a whole new world for the children that we help: they can play with their friends, get involved in sport, participate more actively in family life and attend mainstream school - often for the first time.

All the charity's equipment is 'made to measure' so each child is personally assessed by one of its experienced national network of professional Mobility Therapists. Having listened to the individual needs of the child and taken into consideration what they would like to be able to do with their new equipment, they decide on the most suitable type of mobility equipment.

The customised wheelchairs and specialised mobility equipment that Whizz-Kidz provides costs anything from £400 upwards. The current average cost of a customised wheelchair or other type of mobility equipment is £2,800, however a complex powered wheelchair could cost up to £13,000.

Our history

Whizz-Kidz was registered in 1990 after Chief Executive, Michael Dickson, and Trustee, Dr. Ricky Richardson, ran the London Marathon and raised £9,500 to purchase a state-of-the-art wheelchair for a young girl with Cerebral Palsy.

This led to the realisation that there was a real need for customised mobility equipment that could offer both independence and empowerment to children with disabilities.

Since 1990, Whizz-Kidz has grown dramatically and has raised over £23,000,000 to get more than 3,200 children 'whizzing'!
