Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.

Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease.

Meningococcal bacteria are carried in the nose and throat of 10 to 25 % of us, but only a small proportion of people exposed to the bacteria develop the disease. In these people, the bacteria overcome our immune system through the bloodstream and to the brain.

Meningitis Research foundation set up in 1989 and has since spent £11 million on projects. They are currently supporting 24 research projects
