• Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord.
• Septicaemia is the blood poisoning form of the disease.
• Meningococcal bacteria are carried in the nose and throat of 10 to 25 % of us, but only a small proportion of people exposed to the bacteria develop the disease.  In these people, the bacteria overcome our immune system through the bloodstream and to the brain.
• Meningitis Research foundation set up in 1989 and has since spent £11 million on projects.  They are currently supporting 24 research projects
