In order to raise money for World Rabies Day and the for Rabies Control a team, made up of scientists working on Rabies at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency and other colleagues, hired two yachts and sailed around the Isle of Wight over the weekend of 13th - 15th August. Braving winds of up to 25 knots, with the boats reaching speeds of up to 8.9 knots, we circumnavigated the island over 2 days in an estimated cumulative total time of ~8 hours (with several of the team never having sailed before).
The mission of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources. Even though the major impact of rabies occurs in regions of the world where many needs are present, rabies should no longer be neglected. The tools and technology for human rabies prevention and dog rabies elimination are available. Through the World Rabies Day initiative, partners will be………Working Together to Make Rabies History!
Every ten minutes, a family loses a child to rabies, an unimaginably painful disease which still kills over 55,000 people a year. Parents stand and watch helplessly as their child dies an indescribable death, terrified and always conscious of what is happening to them. Often the only answer from governments is the mass, inhumane culling of stray dog populations, which has little effect in control.
Yet rabies is 100% preventable. Had the parents had access to treatment after the dog bite, their child would have survived. Had the dog been vaccinated, the child would not have been infected. This is why the for Rabies Control’s message educate and vaccinate is so important.
