Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Firstly may I say a big thank you for opening the “JustGiving” website link. That’s the first stage in making a contribution to the “Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust” charity.

I, along with a few friends, colleagues and family members plan to cycle from Southport in Lancashire to Hornsea in  along what is known as the “Trans Pennine Trail”. .

My story, and the reason why we are doing this bike ride, is quite simple.

A few years ago (21 November 2005), I was told by a very nice consultant that I had bowel cancer and needed some pretty drastic surgery if I wanted to stay around much longer. As you can probably imagine I was devastated after receiving that news. It took a few days to sink in but I eventually realised that my life was to change significantly and forever, and the next few weeks were quite hectic. I was booked to see a radiotherapist in and a pre-operation interview in Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), and in-between all this I was had to have numerous blood tests an MRI scan and a CT.

Christmas 2005 in DRI is not a happy place to be although the nurses and some badminton friends, Alison and Pauline, did manage to cheer me up no end, as did my close family of course. In the months that followed I realised how lucky I was to be born in a country with such fantastic medical staff and equipment, which is one of the reason I am here today typing this introduction.

I know that the DRI need another scanner and there is an appeal in progress under the guidance of the “Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust” or DCDT. This is my way of saying thank you to the doctors and nurses who made it possible for me to be here today. So please give as generously as you can. Thank you from myself, and all the riders who are brave enough to join me on this trek.

A word from Emma...

When my dad first suggested a coast to coast cycle ride I thought he was nuts! Travelling from one side of the country to another sounded crazy.

But we both love going out on our bikes, and after much discussion we settled on a charity that was close to both our hearts.

Almost losing someone to cancer, especially someone as fit and healthy as my dad, changes your life forever. And I know we are not the only ones.

Please help in whatever way you can.
