POSITION (AGE GROUP) 1,137 (OUT OF APPROX 7,000)
I have chosen Action on Addiction as my charity because it is trying to do something about a problem that affects us all in some way. I have become more and more aware of friends who are in some way affected by a substance misuser. The only reason I know about it is because they talk about it. My concern is that a child may not have that same voice.
I have chosen Action on Addiction as my charity because it is trying to do something about a problem that affects us all in some way.I have become more and more aware of friends who are in some way affected by a substance misuser. The only reason I know about it is because they talk about it.My concern is that a child may not have that same voice.Did you know there are more than 1.5m children who live with parents who have serious alcohol and drug problems? They are truly innocent victims. Imagine how it must feel when you realise that your parents are more interested in getting and using their drink or drugs than in looking after you. Not only do these children often have to look after themselves, they may have to take care of their parents as well while trying to make their way in life inside and outside of school. Many never really experience being a child. Some get old before their time. Not only are their futures at risk but everyday is often unsafe for one reason or another. Running a marathon is hard but these children have to face much greater challenges.
Action on Addiction’s families division called Families Plus has come up with a great way to help these children. It is called Moving Parents and Children Together (M-PACT). It is a programme where children and their parents from different families meet and talk about the affect of addiction on the family. With the help of professional facilitators they work together to identify family strengths and work out new ways to approach life. Action on Addiction wants to see that this programme becomes available to as many children as possible across the UK. I want to support them to do that.
Other than supporting Action on Addiction, I have always had the goal to run a marathon (and London at that) having participated in numerous half marathons. Unfortunately the goal had a time limit. That time limit runs out next October when I turn 30! The London Marathon 2009 is the last possible one I can do without failing in my goal. I did leave it as long as I possibly could!
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Action on Addiction gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
So please sponsor me now!
