OK, here is my plan for April/May 2014...
I have entered the Brighton Marathon on the 6th April, the Milton Keynes Marathon on 5th May and will finish my challenge by completing the Liverpool Rock 'n' Roll Marathon on 25th May. 3 Marathons in 2 Months (47 days to be exact)!
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is the UK's biggest killer!
My overall goal is to provide a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) for Telford Town Park. I will be fundraising for Arrhythmia Alliance, the charity behind the Hearts & Goals campaign, also supported by Fabrice Muamba.
I would love to raise £2125 to buy a ZOLL AED and a weatherproof stainless steel cabinet. The cabinet has a light that comes on when the door is opened and a heater that will come on when the temperature drops below a certain level. This will be available 24/7 and the access code is given once a caller rings 999/112.
I believe that this life saving equipment should be available 24/7. Telford & Wrekin Council have agreed and would be delighted for a cabinet to be attached to the Visitor Centre. There is currently an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) at the Visitor Centre, which can only be used by trained staff and is only available during opening hours. I hope to change that, in a park that sees numerous sporting and other large events!
For those who have not seen a Public Access Defibrillator - It is a fully automated piece of equipment, that talks you through the entire CPR process. It will only deliver a shock if needed, having first analysed the casualty itself. They truly do save lives, here are some facts:
• 100,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the UK every year
• It claims more lives than breast cancer, lung cancer and Aids combined
• CPR only saves the lives of 9% who suffer SCA
• CPR when used alongside an AED massively increases the survival rate from 9% to 50%
I really hope that my friends, family and local businesses will support my chosen cause and potentially help to save lives in Telford!
