Story
As a PhD in education with a huge passion for music, I could not refuse the request of my friend and founder of Bridges for Music, Valentino Barrioseta, to join the #ADEcycle this year.
What is the ADE cycle?
It's a challenge - we'll ride by bicycle to Amsterdam Dance Event mid October. ADE is the biggest conference on electronic music in the world. We're going by bicycle to raise funds and awareness for a beautiful project in South Africa. Bridges for Music is a completely self-funded school built in one of the poorest townships in Cape Town - that gives opportunities to kids who would miss out on education otherwise. At the same time, they accept students from other countries to build bridges between communities. I visited Bridges for Music in May and I was very impressed by the work, effort, and the pedagogical approach - and also the testimonies of students who've been given opportunities there.
You all know I believe that good education is crucial in the fight against poverty - good education is an investment that has life-long and transgenerational returns.
Bridges for Music believes music is a universal language that can be used to break down socio-economic boundaries bridging the big gap existing between rich and poor in developing countries.
Why a fundraising trip to ADE?
Artists have a strong engagement with their fans and as opinion leaders they have a responsibility to raise awareness and take action.
Globalization is arriving to the music industry and electronic music is expanding to developing countries where we have a great opportunity and responsibility to leave a legacy.
I'll be cycling from Brussels to Amsterdam, (+- 100km/day, 2,5 days), which is a challenge I've never done before - but I'll also need friends to sponsor my ride, otherwise it won't bring much funds. :-)
