Story

Andrew was a fit, healthy and active 30 year old when a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) took him from us following the completion of the Edinburgh Half Marathon in May 2013. There is nothing which could have prevented this awful occurrence - An SCA can affect any one of us at any time and as in Andrew's case, often without any warning.

Andrew didn't suffer from a heart complaint or something which could have been readily treated or spotted, and so for this reason the Hearts and Goals campaign linked to the Arrhythmia Alliance charity feels most appropriate to remember him by - the main aim of this campaign being to tackle SCAs by helping to place public-access Automated External Defibrillator (AED) equipment for use in the event of an emergency.

CPR alone saves just 9% of people who suffer from a sudden cardiac arrest. CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) increases the chance of survival five-fold to 50%.

The facts -

- 100,000 people die from SCAs in the UK every year

- it claims more lives than Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer and AIDs combined

- CPR only saves the lives of 9% who suffer SCA

- CPR when used alongside an AED massively increases the survival rate  from 9% to 50%

Thousands of pounds for Hearts and Goals have already been raised in Andrew's memory by his family, friends and colleagues - one of life's real gentlemen, a truly good, happy and beautiful soul. This page works to enable all those raising money for Hearts and Goals in Andrew's memory, to do so in a way which allows us to see just how much has been raised in total for this genuinely special, funny and unforgettable gentleman.
