We empower women & girls through education to lift themselves out of poverty

Story

I have chosen to run and raise money for Wonder Foundation’s Junkabal project to support them in their maintenance of Junkabal School in Guatemala.

Many people living in Guatemala City make a living by sorting through the 40-acre rubbish dump in hope of finding something worth selling. The dump is the largest in Central America and the untreated waste is hazardous and unhealthy for the hundreds of families who live there and scavenge from it. This is the fate of many families in Guatemala City, including children - but it doesn’t have to be.

Wonder Foundation is partnered with the Junkabal Foundation which seeks to help vulnerable families living around the dump by sending their children to school to receive a vital education offering hope for young women and children. The school currently has around 450 students enrolled but they would like to support more.

In order to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, and be safe from child labour and exploitation, Junkabal offers subsidised fees and scholarships. The school also works closely with parents, especially mothers, to offer vocational training courses to help them secure better-paid jobs and/or start their own businesses.

For £60 you can support a family send their child to school to receive an excellent quality education for a year.

Donations made will go towards the subsidy of school fees for the most vulnerable children and towards uniform and equipment costs for low-income families.

Melany (student at Junkabal):

“Junkabal  School  has given me and my classmates the best possible start to our education and careers. Some of the girls who have graduated have already gone on to university to study things like law and medicine. Even though they are from poor families they will have great careers and opportunities now.

Sarai Gonzalez (20-year-old Junkabal student):

“The technical trainings have been very helpful at my actual job. It has made be better and able to share work with my teammates. I feel like a better person. My clients have noticed the difference and I can say that I have learned so much from  Junkabal. The integral formation classes have been such a great help and I am very happy.”
