Story

As many of you may know, my wonderful Managing Director, Nick Milligan, was killed in a tragic accident in 2013, along with his young daughter, Emily. His incredibly inspirational wife Victoria recently visited my office to share her unbelievable story of recovery and to recruit for the Media Trust Triathlon… Which is why I am now about to embark on my first Triathlon!

Given that I’ve only been on a bike twice since I finished school (both cycling tours), and my recent attempt at outdoor swimming made me feel like something akin to an extra in Titanic; I imagine that it may well be my last!

Media Trust is such a fantastic cause that helps a huge amount of charities (more details below) and I would be ever so grateful if you could please sponsor me!

Media Trust is the UK’s leading communications charity. They work in partnership with the wider media, digital and advertising industry to support charities, communities and young people to have a voice.

Your donation can make a difference because:

Each year Media Trust builds the capacity of 2,500 charities and communities to speak out and have a voice in society. In 2016 Abdi applied to be part of their Somali Voices training programme, a project to empower leaders in the UK Somali community to challenge negative stereotypes in the media. Abdi received free media skills training, mentoring from a media professional and media contacts to raise the profile of his work. Using his new skills, he’s secured new media coverage for his organisation, hosted a film screening for other charities and created a monthly newsletter to engage journalists and the media in his work to support local, young Somalians.

Each year Media Trust releases hundreds of media professionals from the media industry to volunteer their time and skills to small charities with little or no budget for communications. In 2015 they matched the charity BookBus, who promote literacy and education in the poorest areas of Africa, with a media professional, Claire. She “transformed their communications” through more than a year’s worth of support and even visited the project in Malawi. Claire has even become personal donor and brought in new corporate funding to the charity.

Each year Media Trust uses media to empower over 1,000 young people to reach their potential. In 2016 Susheel took part in their London360 employability programme. Having a history of health problems, the six week programme enabled him to realise that his “limitations did not define him” and it was “one of the best experiences I’ve had so far in life”. As a result of the programme Susheel secured a full-time job in a media company as a trainee researcher.
