We Support people in abstinent recovery to Change pain into purpose

Story

On Sunday 10th October the Brown-Forman UK Live Well team will be running the London Royal Parks Half Marathon on behalf of Changes UK.

Changes UK vision is to enable a future where anyone can find recovery from addiction, restore connection with their families/communities and live a life with dignity, hope and purpose.

In 2019 drug related deaths were the highest ever on record, huge reductions in public funding has closed multiple recovery centres making it increasingly more difficult to access treatment.

Addiction is particularly difficult to escape for disadvantaged individuals who do not have the means to pay for private treatment. Following Lottery funding this year Changes UK is extending its services to include an innovative, affordable detox centre that continues to support those who have no means to pay. The centre is due to open its doors this Autumn 2021.

Families are a crucial part of the recovery process and we want to raise £10,000 to purchase a family visiting/counselling room which gives families the privacy and space to reconnect and the opportunity to be part of their loved ones treatment programme.

We understand that abstaining from drugs and alcohol is just the beginning of building a new life free from addiction; therefore Changes provides services that support the whole recovery journey - from dependence to independence. We provide a detox service, community based rehabilitation, supported and move on housing and opportunities to gain accredited qualifications, volunteering and work experience. Service users at the beginning of their recovery journey are supported 24 hours a day by qualified staff and our specially trained volunteer peer mentors. They also have access to our Recovery Academy which, over an eight week full time course, begins to build the knowledge and skills that service users need in order to maintain their recovery, build a personal recovery support network (including mutual aid groups) and learn to live life to the full. Changes staff and volunteers are passionate people - we all consider it a privilege to work with people in recovery - and we know that we can help those looking for a new life beyond drugs and alcohol.
