Night Sleep Out.
In 2011 there were an estimated 80,000 young homeless people. 66% of young people supported by homelessness organisations became homeless because of relationship breakdowns with family, friends or a partner. Young homeless people are twice as likely to die as people their age who have homes. Around a third are dependent on alcohol and almost 40% are dependent on drugs. 30% self-harm. 11% have entered into a sexual partnership in order to get a bed for the night – for young homeless women, it's 14%. A quarter of young homeless women have engaged in sex work in order to fund accommodation or in the hope of getting a bed for the night.
Byte Night is a national sleep out event and is one
of the UK’s top 20 mass participation charity events and is the largest charity
sleep-out having raised over £7.2m since the first event. Each year thousands
of people and teams from technology and business sectors give up their beds for
a night to help change the lives of young people through tackling the root
causes of homelessness. This keeps vulnerable young people off the
streets and enables them to build better lives.
