WHY AM I DOING THIS?

I've wanted to do a long trek since watching Joss Ackland in First and Last - a drama about walking from Lands End to John a'Groats and after reading about how the experience of walking changes after 3 weeks and again after 3 months. I want to see what this feels like.

I retired from work in February 2015 and now is the time to tackle this project and it is a great opportunity to raise much needed funds for Mid-Pennine Arts Association.

Mid Pennine Arts has contributed to the Culture of East Lancs. and particularly Burnley for the last 49 years and 2016 is their 50th anniversary.

I have especially enjoyed the Canal 2000 celebration with musicians playing on the bridges and candles planted along the banks; the Panopticans project, particularly the Singing Ringing Tree and the Christmas Truce which commemorated the football match in no man's land between the Germans and the English troops in 1914.

PREPARATION

Over the last few years I have honed down the route possibilities. Now I have just 1 month to get fit, sort our my gear;  print off the maps; research the camping and hostelling possibilities and find our where the best scones are to be found. I expect the route to be about 700 miles.

Setting off on the 1st of March means that many hostels and campsites  are closed but it does mean that spring will move North with me as I go.
