Story
Bield currently have grant funding to provide a twice-monthly restaurant style dining experience for older people living with dementia in Kirkintilloch. However, we are looking for donations to continue & expand this service &, if possible, start new ones in places where it is vitally needed. We receive no statutory funding& run this service in addition to our regular Day Care services.
The idea behind Mary's Kitchen came from a carer at Whitehill Court who explained that it's very difficult to take out someone living with dementia to a local restaurant to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Unfamiliar surroundings can cause anxiety, many restaurants are not accessible, there are no trained staff on hand should problems arise & it can be unsettling for everyone if they "cause a scene" as staff & fellow diners may not understand the effect dementia can have on people. Therefore, it's easier not to bother. However, the staff ingenuously thought why not recreate a dining service in the Day Care centre? This allows older people, carers & family to enjoy an evening out together without worrying about other diners & help is on hand should any be required.
This provides some family time to relax & the funding means anyone can enjoy this opportunity irrespective of their income although those who can afford to do donate. Again, this provides additional care for older people living with dementia after regular working hours, & most importantly creates new memories that the whole family can cherish.
The yearly cost of running one evening care service per month for up to 10 people is around £5,000 & so far, we have benefited over 50 older people, carers, friends & family. Please take a look at the short film which really brings home the need for these services & others.
Although £5,000 seems a lot of money, any donation could help us to extend these services or at least provide an additional place for someone in desperate need of some family time. Please give if you can.
Thank you.
