Over 50% of all Spitfires produced were made in Birmingham and the production of these aircraft made an enduring impact on this City. The stories of the Spitfire and Hurricane, and of the men and women that built these icons must be told to the wider world.

Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum has two magnificent war-time aircraft, belonging to the city, on display: the Super marine Spitfire Mark IX and the Hawker Hurricane Mark IV.

In our new gallery, visitors will explore the history of the aircraft  in a thought-provoking and interactive way through real objects and stories of their creation. Visitors of all ages will also be able to explore the science behind aviation -  What keeps a plane in the air? How are the parts manufactured? What is the modern aviation industry like today?

If you are passionate about the Spitfire and Hurricane aircraft, local heritage and engineering here is your chance to be part of something special. Each donation will make a difference, but if you make a single donation of £75 or more you will become an 'oppo' (that means friend in RAF slang) of the Spitfire Club. You will receive an invitation for you and a guest to the exclusive launch of the gallery, a membership certificate, three updates from Science Curator, Lis Chard-Cooper and acknoweldegment online. If you do wish to become a Spitfire Club member, please do not select to remain anonymous when donating so that we can send your 'oppo' gear!

Donate to the Spitfire Club before Christmas, and your donation will be matched pound for pound by a private donor Clive Richards OBE DL making your contribution doubly valued.
