Story
Charity Initiative to support Kyiv Hematology Centre for Children (part of OKHMATDYT National Children’s Hospital)
In countries such as the US where modern medication and equipment are available, the success rate of treating leukemia reaches 94%.
In Ukraine this number is only 47%. Hundreds of children are dying annually in Ukraine as they cannot access the same treatment.
There is only one hospital in Ukraine where children’s survival chances increase - Kyiv Haematology Centre for Children (part of OKHMATDYT National Children’s Hospital). At any time there are around 65-70 little inpatients, but the centre is desperately short of drugs and medical equipment.
We are a charity initiative with a mission to provide the centre and these children with the support they so vitally need. Together with London-based Ukraine Charity we have united our efforts for this noble cause.
Our current target:
Without effective equipment to prepare blood for transfusions, many children will not survive. We are currently raising funds to purchase a blood separator for the Centre. This is needed to harvest blood cells from donor blood (platelet, plasma, white and red blood cells), ready for transfusion.
What blood separator is for:
The blood separator is needed to transfuse platelet concentrate to children in order to increase their own platelet count. Without platelet concentrate there is a very high risk of internal bleeding that cannot be stopped. The blood separator takes blood from a donor, passes it through a centrifuge, harvests platelets and infuses donor blood back into the donor. In this case the donor suffers minimal blood loss and can donate platelet concentrate again two weeks later.
The machine costs – UAH 200 000 ( $25 000, £16 000, €20 000).
How you can help:
Donate as much as you can or wish – any amount would be of great help. You can donate an equivalent of 1 hour of your wages (or 1 day, as was done in Ukraine) or a value of 1-2 dinners out. Money that we spend on everyday things can make a vast difference when used for this noble cause.
