Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page.

Bob's wife, Dee, and his children, Beccy and Angus and his friends from Scottish Water have chosen to raise money for Water Aid in memory of him.

Water Aid tackle the problems caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation in Third World countries. A hand pump costs £37, a pair of taps cost £20 and a well and rope pump costs £472 - all of these items help to provide safe drinking water for a community.

During 2016, Scottish Water visited Zambia with Water Aid. We raised over £13,000 that year in memory of Bob and the money was spent on training sanitation champions who rolled out training to several villages. The money raised was used to fund WaterAid’s sanitation champions in Zambia. The champions are taught about water sanitation and then pass on their knowledge to other people in their village.

The work has changed the lives of many and has lessened the occurrence of illnesses resulting from poor sanitation. One such champion, Grace Chitungu campaigned for the construction of toilets in her village and as a result of her hard work every household has a toilet.

More than half of the population of Zambia lives in poverty and millions lack clean water and basic toilets. Scottish Water’s fund raising last year has helped to reach 61,000 people with safe water and 62,000 people with improved sanitation.

During 2017, we raised £9000 in memory of Bob. The money is being spent building a sanitation block for a school in a village in Rwanda. The sanitation block will make a huge difference to the children and wider community. As the block also contains a new menstrual health room, it will make an additional difference to all the girls at the school who will no longer feel prohibited from attending school at a key point in the month. Providing educational provision for girls makes a huge difference both to the quality of life for the girls concerned, and for their future maternal health and economic empowerment which then benefits their wider community. In this way, the next generation also benefits from a better quality of life.

In 2018, we hope to raise more money that will support the development of a WaterAid project that will make a real difference to another international community. Thank you for your support with this.
