Story

Help India overcome caste and gender discrimination - help spread humanity around the world - by supporting our girls in the Solera Girls Home.  They have come to us from the most poor and deprived families, but with your help they'll have the best chance to become confident, well educated and happy women, shining examples for others to develop a bright, humane future for all of us.

To be born in rural India as a Dalit girl means to face double discrimination - as a member of a deprived caste and as a girl. The girls have experienced strong poverty, violence in their families and
discrimination in their villages and social surroundings. Although the caste system is by law invalidated in India since 1950, it still determines the social life of Indian society especially in the rural areas. The girls come from families of the former Untouchables caste, now they call themselves Dalits, meaning “oppressed”. Their parents are farmers, workers in brick factories or day laborers. Schools are often far away from the villages, it is dangerous for the children to get there on their own, especially for girls. During the rainy season it can be even impossible to go to school. Due to the poverty, addiction to alcohol is often a problem in the families, which leads to physical and
psychological violence. Girls are additionally in danger of abuse, which
frequently happens. As girls are still valued less in India, their chances for school education are generally less than those of boys, so they hardly have any choices in their life.

Here in Solera Girls Home they get a chance to escape from a predetermined future of poverty and discrimination. They experience
mutual support, friendship and a harmonious community, acceptance and tolerance, empowerment, hope and trust in a positive future development. They study in the government schools and colleges and get well prepared for further university studies. They will be leaders  in their families and villages in the struggle to change social conditions for the Dalits and women in India.

On 8.3.2015 the Solera Girls Home and Karuna Women’s Centre was inaugurated by its supporters: Audatex (a German industrial company), Karuna UK (a British charity) and Karuna Germany, its  sister charity in Germany.  It’s a newly built, simple building of a good constructional standard. We give homes to 30 girls from the most poor and
deprived families, aged between 11 and 19. Our staff is taking care of their day to day needs, so they receive a good, healthy nutrition, have a supportive daily routine, get tutoring to successfully master their education, have elders to talk to and receive counseling. Several programs are run throughout the year to help the girls to heal past psychological wounds, develop self confidence and a positive future perspective for their life, and to learn about their rights.

We need your financial support to secure the running costs of the Solera Girls Home. We receive some funds from Karuna Germany and Karuna UK, still our yearly needs for the girls are not fully covered. We need to raise 373,900 INR  (5,325 EUR/4,565 GBP/ 5600 USD)  to fully cover our running costs for the year 2017.
