Story

I'm 17 years old and serving in the army, I want to challenge myself by competing in this years summer fan dance which is renowned as being one of the most gruelling and difficult events to compete in, this is why the SAS have it in their selection. It consist of carrying a weight of 35lbs on your back for a total distance of 15 miles(24km), yes, call me mad. When I was young my mom became a widow and she has also been challenged in raising her two children by her own. This a reason as to why I chose the charity I have as I know what the families who have lost someone close can feel like, even more so when they are serving.

The Army Widows' Association was formed by a group of Army widows in 2004.It aims to offer support and friendship to those who have sadly lost their husband/wife or recognised partner at any stage of their bereavement through mutual empathy, experiences and by signposting new members to other sources of help at such a difficult time in their lives. The AWA offers its support to all widows bereaved since 1981, death can have been as a result of many reasons: illness, RTA, conflict, suicide, training accidents. We hold an annual weekend and other events where widows can meet up, meet others who are in the same situation as themselves, find out lots of information, raise issues and are developing a network of smaller Regional meetings to improve our support.
