As you may know, Cathy and I are long-standing supporters of Children in Crossfire, the Derry-based international development charity that delivers education and healthcare programmes for some of the world’s most vulnerable children, in Tanzania and Ethiopia. 

We are both close friends of Richard Moore, Children in Crossfire’s founder. Richard was blinded when he was just ten years old, when a British soldier fired a rubber bullet fired at him at point blank range. Remarkably, Richard grew up without bitterness over being blinded. In fact, years later he met, forgave and befriended the soldier. That act of forgiveness led to the Dalai Lama describing Richard as his “hero” and becoming Children in Crossfire’s patron.

To mark my upcoming 60^th birthday, between Thursday 15^th and Sunday 18^th September Cathy and I will be cycling from Malin Head to Mizen Head – the full length of Ireland – to raise vital funds for this great cause.

Right now, Children in Crossfire's programmes are building wells and classrooms, treating and preventing severe acute childhood malnutrition, training teachers and equipping classrooms.
