Story
As many of you who know me can confirm, when I last ran a marathon - almost 10 years ago - I never wanted to do this again! The 15-20 mile runs every Sunday in February! The ice baths! The physiotherapy I had on my knee afterwards! All of it contributed to me enjoying the experience of my first marathon but not particularly wanting to do it again......Well, all that changed!
In the marathon's (and my) 40th year, I'll be strapping my knee up, slipping into my running tights and kicking off my training! And why would I do this madness again? Put simply - London Friend.
Many years ago, I volunteered for London Friend on their helpline and they are an absolute lifeline for anybody - both within the LGBTQ+ community and outside. Everyone is welcome there.
London Friend was founded in 1972 as a telephone helpline and support group for those who were isolated and struggling with their identity. As times changed, so did London Friend.
As well as continuing to operate regular support groups - from their home on Caledonian Road - they offer complimentary weekly English lessons, for anyone where English isn’t their first language. They run independent sessions for Lesbian, Gay and Trans people; offering an open forum to address any issues that they may need support on. They also support victims of domestic abuse - offering advice and future help.
London Friend also run Antidote, which is a LGBTQ+ drug and alcohol drop-in for people who are struggling with their addiction. This drop-in session, which runs weekly, is so important for people trying to beat their addiction and gives people an environment to start rebuilding their lives. I cannot stress how important Antidote is to the people who use the drop-in sessions.
By sponsoring my marathon run, you will be ensuring that London Friend continue to operate and continue to be a shining light within the LGBT+ community. They have been operating for 40 years so let’s get donating and make sure they keep going!
