We provide corrective cleft surgery to disadvantaged children in Asia

Story

The Northern Cleft Foundation offers free corrective surgery that transforms a child’s life, giving them hope for the future.

The Charity delivers surgical care to the same standards as the NHS. Annually, five UK theatre teams volunteer to deploy to India for an outreach, each team includes a consultant cleft surgeon and a consultant anaesthetist.

A significant number of children in India are born with a cleft lip and palate deformity. Too poor to access medical help, many are left unable to eat or speak properly. There is great social isolation and stigma that results from being born with such a deformity in a developing country. Many children are teased because of their appearance and inability to communicate.

The physical, psychological and social implications of being born with a cleft lip and palate cannot be underestimated.

I am a consultant anaesthetist travelling to India in January for the 2018 Outreach.  I last deployed with the Northern Cleft Foundation for an outreach in 2016 when over 100 operations were completed.

To date the NCF have given over 1500 children a smile for life.
