Thank you for visiting my page and helping me to raise money for Imperial College's Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI).
Much of the last twelve months have been uncomfortable for me, culminating in an operation in June. The root cause of this was a parasitic infection, called schistosomiasis, that I contracted in Malawi 20 years ago. Fortunately I have had access to fantastic free healthcare, but for most of the 200 million people at risk in the developing world this is not the case.
There is no cure or vaccination for schistosomiasis, but treatment is very simple and as cheap as $0.50 per person per year. SCI runs treatment programs in high-risk countries, conducts detailed mapping surveys to identify at-risk areas, and performs research into identification and treatment methods. They are a poster child of the effective altruism movement due to the proven effectiveness of their programmes, and the cost-effectiveness of their operation.
SCI are currently run out of Imperial College and led by renowed parisitologist Professor Alan Fenwick.
