Story

I am now entering my 4th year of working for the Oxford Young Adult Clinic and have seen first hand the difference it is making to young peoples lives. During my time i have completed 2 109km cycle rides to raise money for the clinic and now i turn to road running, aiming to complete the Oxford Half in a respectable time.  Being a self funded service receiving no money from the NHS we are solely reliant on generous donations to keep this crucial service ongoing. Please give whatever you can to keep supporting teenagers and young adults who are diagnosed with kidney failure.

Here's a little bit about why i'm doing the run:

Being told the devastating news you have a chronic illness is hard to take at any age in your life, however imagine being told it whilst you are young. Imagine being told you have chronic kidney failure and will need immediate treatment and that your life is going to change. Needing drastic medication, dialysis and a transplant as a teenager leads to depression, social isolation and difficulty completing education or gaining employment, it also can put  young persons life on hold. The Oxford Young Adult clinic is an innovative support service which supports young people through diagnosis, treatment, transplantation and recovery. Through community clinics, peer support, social events, activity trips and 1 to 1 support from a youth worker the Oxford YAC helps young people deal with their kidney disease and get on with their lives. The objectives of the clinic are to reduce isolation, help facilitate acceptance of kidney failure, reduce denial and make life saving organ transplants last for many years. By building a support network of trust the clinic aims to make managing this horrific period in a teenagers live much easier to deal with. Money raised through the Oxford YAC helps young people get back into sport and attend the British Transplant Games. We use sport as an engagement tool to improve physical health and mental health. Many young people wouldn't be able to attend events like this without support from the YAC.
