We identify and recognise unpaid carers to support them in their caring roles

Story

Through an internet forum I found out about a charity endurance race to be held to raise money for Swindon Carers Centre. As a keen motorsport and gamaing enthusiast it seemed a great way to do something I love, whilst helping to raise funds for a group which supports over 21,000 carers in and around Swindon.

I am fortunate enough not to need a carer, but for those who are the work that carers do is invaluable. They really are the only way some people get by and anything that fund raises to help keep these services going is a fantastic cause in my book!

A little bit about Swindon Carers Center: Our Vision is to create a community where unpaid carers are recognised, valued and supported. Our Mission is to improve the wellbeing of people with caring responsibilities in and around Swindon.Swindon Carers Centre is a charitable organisation to provide help and support to the 21,000 carers in Swindon. We work to identify as many carers as possible and to provide the most relevant support for their caring situation. We work with carers from the age of 5 years old.

The mission of Swindon Carers Centre (SCC) is to improve the well-being of people with caring responsibilities in and around Swindon, creating a community where carers are recognised, valued and supported. It is part of the Carers Trust Network, and was established to provide help and support to the 21,000 carers in Swindon. SCC has a team of professionals and trained volunteers, who provide a wide range of support and services to carers of all ages: • Assessing carers’ needs on an individual basis and draw up support plans to reduce the impact of caring on their lives. This includes young carers aged between 5 and 18 • Providing breaks – a few hours of respite for carers and families • Running a range of self-help groups for carers, giving them the opportunity to meet with other carers and share information and advice • Working in partnership with schools to support young carers to fulfill their potential • Offering training courses to groups of carers based on their needs • Delivering an Emergency Card scheme to offer carers peace of mind • Running a Welfare and Benefits Advice service to support carers (and the people they care for) who are facing financial difficulties and may be eligible for welfare benefits but are not claiming them. Benefits Advisors assess carers’ eligibility for benefits based on their individual circumstances and needs.
