Story
Since the killing of George Floyd on 25th May 2020, there has been a lot of focus on the Black Lives Matter movement here in the UK. Black men, women and children have seized this opportunity to make sure their voices are heard. Whilst there have been some encouraging signs and some positive steps have been taken by employers and various institutions, there is still a huge amount of work to be done. This is not a quick fix and there is most certainly, no single solution to unravel hundreds of years systemic racism.
My commitment to being an anti-racist is not just to jump on the bandwagon of hashtags and BLM t-shirts for a month or two. My commitment is to continuously talk about racism, the part I play as a white man, the part my ancestors played and the responsibility I have to bring about change. In order for black people to have equal opportunities, be treated equally in society and to enjoy all of the the privileges I enjoy - I need to give up my privilege, so that it becomes a level playing field. This is something which is imperative if we want to achieve equality.
Having completed a 3,000km Cycle for Black Lives in June of this year I feel there is an opportunity to raise awareness once again, and to to support the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation. This time, I am adding another 500kms to the challenge for good measure and I hope I will receive as much support as I did for the last effort.
