Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page, I appreciate it.
In February 2013, my nephew who was then 18 years old was diagnosed with an incurable illness.
This illness is an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) called Ulcerative Colitis.
My nephew has had a year from hell but he's a fighter and will keep fighting to win this battle! I'm proud of him and how he has approached this illness, never moaning or asking the question "why me", he just gets on with it, which is why I'm going to show my support and complete a challenge to raise funds for the charity that supports him and others around the UK.
It has been life changing for him and his family, including me, but I am going to support them the best I can. I have seen the devastating effect it can have on a daily basis and that is why we MUST raise awareness for Crohns and Colitis.
"KEEP UP THE POSITIVITY JORDAN" - you know I'm here for you always, in any way I can help! Love Uncle David x
Anyone can develop IBD - and at least 261,000 people are affected by Ulcerative Colitis (146,000) and Crohn's disease (115,000) in the UK - Although recently published data suggest that this could be as many as 620,000.
The illnesses can occur at any age, but often begin in younger people aged 10-40. There are up to 18,000 new cases a year. Both conditions are found worldwide, but are more common in developed countries.
The main symptoms are:
- abdominal pain
- diarrhoea (sometimes mixed with blood, especially in Ulcerative Colitis)
- tiredness and fatigue
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- abscesses and fistulas (in Crohn's)
- swollen joints, mouth ulcers and eye problems
During a flare up you can lose a lot of blood and it can lead to you being hospitalised.
PLEASE show your support too by sponsoring me and helping to raise awareness for Crohn's and Colitis.
