Story
Deafway is an international charity, founded in 1894 in Preston where it is still based. They work in the UK and internationally in Nepal, Uganda and Kenya, working with and supporting their Deaf communities.
In 2015 a Nepalese Deaf school Deafway support was badly damaged by an earthquake. I was able to arrange some engineering assistance to help rebuild the school. I visited the school in March 2017 and was very impressed with efficient aid provided by Deafway and the difference it made to deaf children's lives.
Deafway's ethos is is understanding and respect of the Deaf community, its culture and promotion of sign language.
In the UK their principal services include,
- residential care services, based at their site in Preston, for Deaf adults with a range of additional needs.
- Provision of sign language and Deaf awareness courses.
- Promotion of Deaf sports including sponsoring deaf athletes in the Deaflympics, held every 4 years.
- Sponsored awards at the Deaf Sports Personality of the
Year (every 2 years). - Working to achieve equal access and opportunity for people who are D/deaf”
- Removing barriers to access of services and social opportunity and promoting appropriate and effective sign language communication.
I am extremely pleased to be able to undertake this walk and have the opportunity to raise funds for Deafway's work with the Deaf communities. Max has accompanied me on long distance walks since 2017, we both look to having members of Deafway joining us on the final part of the walk into Prestatyn.
