On 7th May 2013, I was privileged to become a living donor. My nephew, Ryan, suffers from Wegener's Disease - an extremely rare illness that attacks his lungs and kidneys. Just before the transplant surgery, Ryan's kidney function was down to 8% and he faced a lifetime of dialysis. However, thanks to past research into kidney failure and a fantastic transplant team, he was able to have the surgery and will now be able to live a relatively normal life, without the need for dialysis.
