For a number of years I have been supporting The Polar Academy, a truly remarkable Scottish charity that is committed to inspiring Scotland's youth through exploration. The charity was founded by Scotland's greatest living Polar explorer, Craig Mathieson. I was appointed a Trustee and Chair of the Board in April 2018.
Every year, Craig and his team select 10 'invisible' 14-17 year old school pupils whose self-esteem and self-confidence has been crushed by personal circumstances at home or at school. After 10 months of rigorous training at school, in the Scottish Highlands and on a 10-day expedition in Arctic Greenland, these young people's lives are transformed. They are given the chance to redefine their physical and mental limits and return from the Arctic with a can do attitude.
On their return, each pupil shares their experiences with a minimum of 3,000 of their peers in schools across the country and beyond. They are living and breathing proof that dreams are attainable and that ordinary young people can achieve the extraordinary. More than 60,000 school pupils have been engaged with throughout Scotland to date.
I will be running the EMF Half Marathon on 27 May 2018. No Polar bear costumes will be involved!
