Hi Everyone - Denis and Dave here!
Not sure if you've heard but we've decided that now we are well into our 40's it is the right time to run a marathon. As a lot of you will know we are both naturally built for long distance running, although we have hidden this for the past few decades under our 'front row' physique.
We played side by side in the front row at the John Fisher School through out our school years, and then played the vast majority of our senior rugby at Purley John Fisher RFC (before Dave headed northwards). So it only felt right to also run together.
Our club PJF RFC has a great ethos both on and off the field. The touring side of the club is the stuff of legends. In fact the imagination of the various touring committees over the years was amazing, ingenious and somewhat disconcerting.
Rugby has given us so many good memories, great life long friends, as well teaching us fundamental values for life.
All contact sports come with an element of risk and these are mitigated by proper coaching and training. We were fortunate enough to play for more than 20 years without any serious injuries. There were a couple of bad knocks from time to time - especially Dave's ankle, but we recovered relatively quickly from all of them. Unfortunately, a few players, albeit a small number, are not so lucky.
We're running for the RFU Injured Players Foundation. This is an amazing charity which supports rugby players who have been unlucky enough to sustain catastrophic injuries. The RFU IPF also do fantastic work around injury prevention through research and education. Please go to their website for more details about the great work they do : http://www.rfuipf.org.uk/
