Story

OMG I am running the actual London Marathon! Those who know us well know that The Pearces are not natural born athletes, so the fact I have decided to run the marathon is a massive deal (and one that probably classifes me as insane in my family!)

Please please sponsor me and help me raise money for RNIB! My target is to raise £1,500!

Here's my sob story and the reason I'm running for RNIB...(imagine violins playing and Dermot's voice reading out my story to a montage of sad images and tears as though I was auditioning for the X-Factor... you can skip this bit if you like as long as you donate.)

As some of you may remember, a few years ago I had hereditary cataracts (n. Opacity of the lens or capsule of the eye, causing impairment of vision or blindness) and before I had them operated on, I found the simplest things a huge challenge and quite frightening (like recognising my friends in the pub) and walking into closed doors became a bit boring after a while! I also had to give up driving as I was no longer legal to be behind the wheel which took away a huge amount of my freedom because I live out in the sticks.

I used to cry out of sheer frustration at not being able to do a relatively small amount of every day things that most people just take for granted.

In 2007 I was lucky enough to have the corrective surgery and it literally changed my life (although I couldn't go out at all for a few days as I had to wear a patch!)

On a serious note though, I can't imagine what it must be like to live without your sight forever, or live knowing that your sight will continue to deteriorate until one day you can't see at all, and the RNIB really makes a huge difference to the lives of people who are blind or partially sighted. The RNIB provide support to over 2 million people living with sight loss and develops ways to help them learn (braille and talking books) and by coming up with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send rubbish, boring and unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate.

Knowing that there's so many people donating money will make me want to run faster to the finish line, so please give as much as you can, and have a chuckle imagining me trying to run 26 miles...

About the charity

Every day 250 people in the UK start losing their sight. With your help, we can be there when people need us most, support independent living, create an inclusive society and prevent avoidable sight loss. Every pound you raise will help create a future where sight loss is no longer a barrier.
