Story
In April 2010 my step dad had a life saving operation to remove a tumor from his brain stem, the surgeons did a fantastic job but unfortunately because of the delicate nature of the surgery he lost his sense of balance, the majority of his sight and speech.
Having served in the HM Forces and living a very full and active life, gardening and DIY being two of his passion, his life changed overnight. The last four years have been spent on rebuilding his life; small things like eating again by mouth rather than a tube and re learning the art of speech with little help from the authorities.
This year my mum and step dad were introduced to the Blind Veterans UK Charity who provide vision impaired Armed Forces and National Service veterans with tailored support from helping them relearn vital life skills, providing them with the tools they need to be independent in their own homes, to offering new learning, training and recreation opportunities and providing long-term nursing, residential and respite care.
My mother and step dad spent a week at the Brighton Centre; on return home I learned that my step dad read a newspaper for the first time in four years, had a game of archery, and had been involved in arts & crafts activities; My mother as the carer was given support, guidance and advice and the most life changing activities for them both is that Blind Veteran UK has provided them with equipment that now allows my step dad to make hot/cold drinks, cook a simple meal and read.
The equipment provided by Blind Veterans UK is provided fee of charge; I would like to hold a charity car boot to raise funds to help fund the Charity so that they can continue to provide the wonderful service they give.
There are two ways in which you could help me -
- Donate your unwanted household items so that I have stock for my car boot, all proceeds raised will go to Blind Veterans UK
- Donate by just giving through this JustGiving page.
- £30 raised could buy a talking watch to help the blind person tell the time
- £350 raised could by accessible software which allows someone with a visual impairment to navigate a computer screen
- £1500 could pay for a stand-alone scanner which converts documents so that they can be read aloud to the user
.Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
